Walrus Facts 🦵
- A big male walrus can weigh as much as a small car — up to 3,700 pounds.
- Those tusks are really just overgrown canine teeth, and they never stop growing.
- Walruses use their whiskers (called vibrissae) like fingertips, feeling around the dark seafloor to find clams.
- They can hold their breath for around 30 minutes on a deep dive.
- Walrus skin can actually change color — pale after a long swim in cold water, pinker once they warm up on the beach.
- When a big group hauls out together on a beach, sailors used to call it a "huddle."
- Walruses can slow their own heart rate down to handle the cold — basically a built-in wetsuit setting.
